The Book of the Dead
The Book of the Dead consists of nearly 200 spells, charms, hymns and formulas used to help the souls of the dead pass through the dangerous part of the underworld.
The Egyptians referred to these as the "Formulae for Going Forth by Day". Unlike the Pyramid Texts, which were only for Royalty, the Book of the Dead was available to all who could afford it.
Originally, the spells of the Book of the Dead were inscribed onto the stone sarcophagi, but eventually these were written onto papyrus rolls and placed with the body inside of the coffin.
Not all of the spells were used in an individuals death as it depended on the wealth of the individual concerned.
The spells which formed the Book of the Dead were dominated by Osiris, the God of the Dead, Afterlife, Rebirth and Fertility.
The Egyptians believed that Osiris would be their judge and determine their suitability to be accepted into the Afterlife.
